New book – A Walking Guide to the Menai Strait Bridges

We are pleased to announce the publication of “A Walking Guide to the Menai Strait Bridges”.

Cover200For many years we’ve offered guided tours of the iconic bridges over the Menai Strait. Our experts point out features of interest and explain the history and engineering and social significance of Telford’s Menai Suspension Bridge and Stephenson’s Britannia Bridge. Now this knowledge has been laid down on paper by Menai Heritage trustees Bob Daimond and Warren Kovach.

“Many groups, societies and visitors to the Menai Heritage exhibition have enjoyed these walks at various times of year”, says Bob, a Chartered Civil Engineer and former Director of Highways for Gwynedd. “This guide book gives sufficient directions and information for visitors to take the walks at their own time and speed.”

Warren, originally from Ohio, USA but a long-time resident of Anglesey, adds “This book opens with a brief history of the bridges, then continues, step by step, around the bridges. The reader can take either a short walk across and under the Suspension Bridge, or a longer one that also takes in the Britannia Bridge.” Warren is the author of the popular Anglesey-History.co.uk website and the book Anglesey Through Time.

The 16-page book is richly illustrated with historical images from the Menai Heritage archives as well as modern photos showing the main points of interest. It is available for £3.50 from the Bridges Exhibition during opening hours (Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10am – 5pm until 29 October), from the Menai Heritage office in the Telford Centre, weekday mornings, and also on-line from our web site: menaibridges.co.uk/online-shop/.

A launch event for the book will be held on Wednesday, 20th May, 6:00pm, at the Thomas Telford Centre in Menai Bridge (across from Waitrose).
