Are you thinking about volunteering opportunities? Menai Heritage (an accredited museum and charity in Menai Bridge) is looking for volunteers. Our volunteers are an essential part of our team and they are valued highly.

About you:

No prior experience is necessary, we will provide you will all of the training and information that you need. We are looking for people who:

  • Are willing to undertake training related to the role
  • Are friendly, approachable, and confident in a busy environment
  • Have an enthusiasm for working with our visitors of all ages and backgrounds
  • Want to share their passion for history in an engaging and interactive way
  • Are able to volunteer for a morning or afternoon session per week
  • Welsh language is desirable, but not essential

What will the Museum expect from me?

  • To be the friendly welcome of the Museum and deliver excellent customer service
  • To be reliable in attendance and dependable; to be at your station in time for the start of your shift
  • Maintain good working relationships with staff, other volunteers and visitors
  • Undertake appropriate training and attend department meetings
  • Represent the Museum in a positive manner at all times
  • Be fully conversant with fire and emergency evacuation procedures
  • Observe the Museum’s policy and procedures

VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTIONS

MUSEUM ASSISTANTS

Summary of Role

Museum Assistants are responsible for visitor support and security in the Museum. They are the first point of contact for visitors to the Museum.

Main Duties

  • Open the Museum and prepare it for visitors
  • Close the Museum and ensure that the building is properly secured
  • Meet, greet and take care of visitors and briefly explain the layout of the building
  • Count visitors as they arrive and record numbers on the sheets provided
  • Deal sympathetically with all visitors and respond to their enquiries regarding the museum and the collection
  • Sell items from the Museum shop and record items sold
  • Gentle cleaning as needed to provide a high standard of presentation
  • To take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work
  • To undertake training as required

COLLECTIONS TEAM VOLUNTEER

Summary of Role

The Collections team assists with the cataloguing and care of the collection managed by the Menai Bridge Community Heritage Trust.

Main Duties

  • Cataloguing the Collection
  • Learning about and implementing the Trust’s policies on the care of the Collection
  • Learn and use museum-based skills including delicate object handling
  • Learning about and then using curatorial computer software
  • Carry out scanning of historical documentation
  • Assist with the accurate recording of the Collection through inputting data into the Trust’s database
  • To consult with the curatorial team about the Collection and required data
  • Learn about the wider work and activities of the Trust
  • From time to time, there may be other curatorial tasks and projects that arise that you could assist with, such as research or transcribing opportunities

HERITAGE WALK VOLUNTEER GUIDE

Summary of Role

Leading groups on guided walks to the Menai and Britannia bridges.

Main Duties

  • Leading and navigating small groups on walks to the bridge locations
  • Ensuring the group remains safe
  • Sharing knowledge about the bridges and their engineers
  • Learning about points of local interest to share with groups
  • To take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work
  • To undertake training as required

SCHOOL GROUPS WORKSHOP VOLUNTEER

Summary of Role

Leading groups visiting from schools.

Main Duties

  • Leading and navigating groups of students and teachers on walks to the bridge locations
  • Ensuring the group remains safe
  • Sharing knowledge about the bridges and their engineers
  • Running child-friendly and age-appropriate workshops in the Canolfan Thomas Telford about bridge engineering and local history
  • Welsh language highly desirable for local schools
  • Learning about points of local interest to share with students and teachers
  • To take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work
  • To undertake training as required
