A Bridge to the Future -OUT OF STOCK
On 10 August 1819 the first stone was laid for the revolutionary Menai Suspension Bridge. Two hundred years later Menai Heritage celebrated the event with a history fair, historical reenactment and plaque unveiling. This short film (20 min.) tells the story of the bridge and that event. Britannia Reborn – OUT OF STOCK
Built in 1850 by Robert Stephenson, the Britannia Tubular Bridge was an innovative and world-famous feat of engineering. However, in 1970 a disastrous fire destroyed the tubular structure. The Menai Bridge
Thomas Telford was a master of stone and iron in the construction of roads, bridges, canals, aqueducts and harbours. This is the story of his most famous single construction.
The site between Anglesey and the Mainland was difficult and dangerous. His design for a suspension bridge was revolutionary. Construction techniques were technologically innovative. The project was an amazing accomplishment in the early use of iron. Nothing on such a scale had been attempted before. Thomas Telford’s handsome Menai Bridge was finished in 1826. With modifications and repairs it remains in use in more demanding times. (Cam 3 Media, 24 minutes)
