The grant from the Winter of Wellbeing programme (which supports the social, emotional and physical wellbeing of children and young people 0 – 25 years) will allow us to hire a young person to provide British Sign Language (BSL) narration on the two videos, as well as subtitles in both English and Welsh. This will not only make them more accessible to young and old alike, but also provide a role model to encourage the young to use BSL.

The bust had originally been in the Railway Institute building in Bangor. The Institute was built in 1898 by the London and North Western Railway company, as a centre for rail workers to socialise, exercise and read. The bust was high on the wall overlooking the reading room but had been hidden for many years by a false ceiling. Just before demolition of the building in 2016 it was rescued by members of the Bangor Railway Club and Menai Heritage volunteers. The club has donated it to Menai Heritage.

The bust and its frame had accumulated many years of dirt and some damage. Menai Heritage received a grant from The Association of Independent Museums, through their Pilgrim Trust scheme, to fund cleaning and repair by Elliott Ryder Conservation.

Robert Stephenson, son of “the Father of Railways” George Stephenson, was a famous and accomplished engineer in his own right. Born in 1803, he developed the most advanced steam engine of its day, The Rocket, when only 25 years old. He went on to be involved in building one third of the railways in Britain, and designed numerous bridges, including the revolutionary tubular Britannia Bridge over the Menai Strait, which opened in 1850.

The bust is now safely back in the Menai Heritage museum and on temporary display. The museum will be reopening to the public on 14 July and can be visited at the Thomas Telford Centre, Menai Bridge (across from Waitrose) during the normal opening hours, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10am-4pm. Entrance fee £3; children under 16 free. Timed entrance tickets can be purchased at http://menai_heritage.eventbrite.com.

The initial walks will be held on Saturday – Tuesday throughout May and June, with morning and afternoon options. Further dates may be announced later.

With current Covid-19 restrictions we can have organised walks with people from multiple households. We limit our groups to 12 people. Your guide will remain two metres away from you at all times; please respect this requirement.

A walk costs a minimum of £12 for up to four people, or £30 for larger groups up to 12. Menai Heritage is a charity and all proceeds from these walks go towards supporting our work preserving the heritage and telling the story of the Menai Bridges area.

Written by accomplished children’s author F.J. Beerling and illustrated by Lucy Gilbert, the bilingual Welsh/English book tells the story of a clever young girl called Uarda, who likes solving puzzles and wants to be an engineer. She travels to the Menai Strait in Wales to see the Britannia Bridge, and while there strikes up a friendship with one of the stone lions that guard the entrance to the bridge.

Jenny Porter, a trustee of the Menai Bridge Community Heritage Trust and the organizer of the project that produced the book, says “Our new book is aimed towards children aged 7-11, in curriculum Key Stage 2. It uses the story to engage kids in problem solving and the ingenuity of engineering.” The book has been sponsored by Mott MacDonald, a global engineering, management, and development consultancy.

The book costs £5.99 and can be purchased online at menaibridges.co.uk/childrens-books. It will also be available at many local shops and tourist attractions that sell books, and from the Menai Heritage Bridges Exhibition, in the Thomas Telford Centre, Menai Bridge, when it reopens.

A walk for a group of up to 4 people costs £12, while one for up to 12 people is £30.
